01ABOUT THE SPACE

At ASICS GRAND FRONT OSAKA, visitors can select running shoes, try them on and test how they feel in motion. Product and service form a continuous, experiential retail environment.

The brand philosophy “Sound Mind, Sound Body” and the scientific approach associated with ASICS RUNNING LAB inform an environment that is clear, functional and centred on the runner.

Luminous ceiling boxes, meticulously arranged footwear and areas for testing shoes are joined through a consistent geometric language. Distinct functions read as one connected space.

02PHOTOGRAPHIC DIRECTION

The aim was to understand not only the architecture of the store, but also the experiences it enables.

During the advance location survey, visitors’ movements and the use of each area were observed, tracing the journey from selecting shoes through fitting and testing. Separately, experiencing the process as a customer, including selection and purchase, informed the final photographic edit.

Soft overhead light from the luminous ceiling boxes established the space’s overall continuity. On the shoe displays, more directional downlighting was given slightly greater emphasis to define the silhouettes and volume of the footwear.

Broad, diffused light unifies the store; more defined pools of light give clarity to its individual functions. Balancing the two maintained the seamless environment while making the products legible.

Composition also depended on subtraction. Repeated squares and cubes create a dense network of edges. Unnecessary intersections and overlapping planes were avoided so that the luminous box surfaces could remain clear and the geometry could read as one continuous whole.

The images were kept bright and precise in keeping with the brand’s scientific approach. For the large LED display on a column, the content was coordinated with the client in advance and photographed when the selected imagery appeared.

Light, product and the movement through the store were brought into a coherent photographic sequence, expressing both the continuity of the space and ASICS’ functional clarity.
